The Ballentine Rule, That Other Tourney: Basketballmanac, 1st Wednesday

The Ballentine Rule, That Other Tourney: Basketballmanac, 1st Wednesday: "

So, not only does my friend David head Down Under (with a side trip to Bali) for most all of the b-ball season, then come back and start pontificating about players and teams he hasn’t watched, but he has the audacity to have a birthday this first NCAA tourney Friday night with a celebratory sit down dinner.

But, Dave, what about the games? They’re on four different channels, all of them. What if one’s close and I feel compelled to take my plate into the den and watch.

Wise man, he. David assured me the Nancy Ballentine Rule will be in full force and effect.

Allow me to briefly review. Ms. Ballentine, the wife of a federal judge, used to write a local etiquette column called “The Louisville Way.”

Ms. Ballentine famously responded to a letter from an aghast newcomer to our community who had some swanky dinner party on the night of a big game. At which soiree, guests grabbed their plates filled them with food and gathered in the TV room to watch “some basketball game.”

The writer indicated it was just about the most disgusting behavior she had ever witnessed.

In response, to the writer’s dismay I’m sure, Ms. Ballentine advised that the behavior of her guests was perfectly appropriate. Further, the hostess was admonished, she should check the basketball schedules, should she want to avoid such a situation in the future.

The Nancy Ballentine Rule. It’s the Louisville Way.

When I get home from a meeting this evening, and turn on the TV to watch some ball, the Mrs. asks if I’m going to watch the NIT, or the play in games from Dayton?

NCAA, of course, I reply. The NIT — and those other two tourneys, one of which also can be viewed at HDTV — are but diversions for those days and nights when the real deal is not playing.

But, what’s a guy to do when UTSA is up 20, but turn over to the NIT?

Where Wichita is similarly taking Nebraska to the woodshed.

Which is why, as I write while waiting for USC/ VCU in the TruTV Network Battle of the 12th Seed Hyphenates, I’m listening to Hubie Brown explain the game with his incredible insight and experience while the Miami LeWaynes play the Okie City Durants.

It’s a different game, the pros. But, my fellow hoopaholics, immerse yourselves a little bit. In three weeks it will be all we have.
